Alex Rodriguez Linked with Steroids

A-Rod with the Texas Rangers

sports illustrated lawful published a contention on si.com that yankee’s third baseman slugger alex rodriguez tested irrefutable in 2003 for primobolan and testosterone while with the texas rangers.

Although steroids and other performance enhancing drugs have been prohibited in baseball back in 1991, there was no testing done on them. After Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001, baseball finally listened to the cries of people claiming rampant drug use. So in 2003 baseball did a survey to determine if they needed to start drug testing. If 5% of the drug tests in 2003 came back positive they would start a drug testing program. And it was one of those positive tests where it is alleged that A-Rod came back positive.

Primobolan, or Primo, is a pretty weak steroid however its fat burning qualities make it popular for users who don’t want to bulk up. It’s not a cheap steroid especially given it’s weak nature; a cycle runs 12 weeks costing about $500. It can be taken orally or by injection, and it doesn’t have the usual side effects of acne and water retention. However it can cause hair loss.

Last year when Jose Canseco’s book Vindicated was released, he alleged that introduced A-Rod to a connection for steroids. A lot of people came out in support of A-Rod saying that it didn’t imply that A-Rod took steroids and that Canseco was just upset because A-Rod had flirted with his wife. I hate to say it, but yet again Canseco is, well Vindicated.

Now while this may not be news and merely confirm everyone’s suspicions, it does raise questions. Namely since he is The Person Annointed to Break Barry Bond’s Career Home Run Record are we going to give A-Rod the same treatment we did Barry Bonds? Has he now lived up to his nickname “A-Fraud”? Will he now admit to using despite denying his use of them in an interview with Katie Couric in 2007 (thanks Deadspin!!!)?

Moscow Moves to Counter US in Asia - Alan Cullison and Yochi Dreazen, Wall Street Journal

russia is reasserting its role in dominant asia with a kremlin puff to disgorge the us from a vital air base and a moscow-led compact to contour an international military extract to contest nato — two moves that potentially complicate the new us clash blueprint in afghanistan. on wednesday, russia announced a financial let go free subsidize for a group of ex-soviet allies and won their treaty to character a military rapid reaction constraint in the region that it said would match north atlantic treaty organization standards. that came a age after kyrgyzstan announced, at russian urging, that it planned to evict the us from the base it has inured to to ferry large numbers of american troops into afghanistan. russia said the base may house part of the planned redone drag instead.

US Searches for Alternative to Central Asian Base - Elisabeth Bumiller and Ellen Barry, New York Times

the obama administration scrambled wednesday to come up with an alternative to a critical synergistic states air base in central asia, used to supply the growing military operation in afghanistan, after the president of kyrgyzstan ordered the american pedestal in his country closed. defense and state department officials said they had concluded that russia had pressed kyrgyzstan, a former soviet republic, to expel the americans. russia has promised not to impede the american-led fight against the taliban in afghanistan, but has also sought to push united states forces out of bases it began leasing in primary asia in the wake of the sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Afghanistan Is Not Iraq, So US Best Not Surge Ahead Blindly - Christopher Brown, US News and World Report

americans are often accused of fighting the last contend. unfortunately, this has a greater ring of truth to it than most would care to admit and normally ends up costing us far more in blood and treasure than if we just considered how new conflicts deviate from previous efforts. this is the very danger skin america as it prepares to take the leading surge strategy from iraq and transplant it to afghanistan. if america attempts a cookie-cutter approach in afghanistan, is it likely to prove once again that “war is god’s way of teaching americans geography.” that is because afghanistan is nothing like iraq. this is true in terms of both the physical and cultural socioeconomic geography that america is confronting.

The Books of the States: New Mexico (5 electoral votes; Guest: Ellery Washington)

Quarter_New_Mexico_Anaya

i feel like i’m living inside zeno’s paradox: the closer i get to b intend to the end of the books of the states, the longer it takes to awaken there. how exactly did i do four or five states a week disregard in the fall? obviously i was insane. well, we only comprise four states and a district left, and i, achilles, resolution catch that tortoise yet, by gum. at which point i look forward to collecting all these nominations (and continuing to ask for more), and then in the spring, announcing our final book of 538 books, our complete electoral library.

But in the meantime, I’ve got a little help from a guest contributor for New Mexico: Ellery Washington, who wrote the essay on the Land of Enchantment for State by State. Washington doesn’t have a book of his own that I can link to on Amazon (yet!), but he did contribute an essay to Griots Beneath the Baobab: Tales from Los Angeles, among other anthologies and literary journals. He grew up in Albuquerque, where his dad worked as an engineer at Sandia National Labs, ground zero for American nuclear weapon research during the Cold War, and where his family was the only black family in their neighborhood. In his State by State piece he manages to link together a near-miss lightning strike, New Mexican mystical realism, the Bomb, Carlsbad Caverns, and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, but the passage I want to quote is itself a quote, a remembered dialogue much like those that must have happened at his own kitchen table, in which a friend “delighted” in making his dad squirm under interrogation about what he actually did at work (and was forbidden by law to reveal):

gregg’s father: “well, hmm… i guestimate you could voice i invent very indicated electronic mechanisms that measure the ens of–well, the levels of, in reality–certain radioactive particles in the sky … coolly, not dwelling in the heavens, but particles that can grow into the atmosphere, by which i mean to believe the air, or possibly the cut–yes, they can get into the water, too–comprised in, um … well, under certain conditions, as they don’t congenitally exist, these radioactive particles i mean, either in the air or in the water … but certain conditions that might all at once be at this point in time the time being beneath extraordinary circumstances … or rather a unexpected and unpredictable circumstance created by android handicap…”gregg: “you mean, like, if the russians dropped a atomic bomb on us?”gregg’s father: (a long pause) “have you finished your homework regardless?”

Washington notes his five N.M. nominations are a personal take on the state, so I’ll give a shout out here to a few other big names who will no doubt also get a mention in what is a rich literary state: Tony Hillerman, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Willa Cather (not to mention D.H. Lawrence and Georgia O’Keefe). Here are Ellery’s five:

Peter Daou: Beltway Buddies (Don’t Mistake Friendship for Bipartisanship)

The Washington Post looks at the meaning of bipartisanship in the Obama era:

the uncertainty over just how the new president defines bipartisanship traces back to the campaign trail. when obama called for an end to “broken and divided politics,” his republican opponent, sen. john mccain (ariz.), and others contended that there were few instances in obama’s career when he had made major concessions that carfuffle chap democrats to reach agreement with republicans.

But this, said some who have worked with Obama, overlooked his intent. To Obama, they said, fixing “broken politics” is less about making concessions just for the sake of finding common ground and more about elevating the debate — replacing cynical gamesmanship and immature name-calling with intellectually honest arguments and respect for the other side’s motives. In his book “The Audacity of Hope,” Obama waxes nostalgic about the fellowship and vigorous debate of Congress’s halcyon days in the mid-20th century more than about the centrist deals the era produced.

This is a laudable aim: disagreeing forcefully but respectfully rather than forcefully and disrespectfully is certainly a welcome change. But I wonder if there’s some confusion in the debate about bipartisanship stemming from the oddly chummy atmosphere inside the Beltway, something that took me a while to get accustomed to during my two extended stints in DC - John Kerry’s presidential campaign in ‘04, Hillary Clinton’s in ‘08. For a progressive NY-based blogger, familiarity with DC culture didn’t come easily, especially since my driving purpose was to defeat George W. Bush and to delegitimize his policies, not to strike up friendships with operatives of other political persuasions.

When I crossed over from activist/observer to political consultant in 2003, I shared the widespread disdain among the netroots for the notion that what was missing in DC was ‘bipartisanship’. What was missing, I believed, was partisanship on the part of Democrats - a fierce advocacy for core Democratic principles lacking among too many Democratic officials.

My view about bipartisanship for its own sake hasn’t changed - I’d rather political leaders stand up for their beliefs instead of yearning for a hazy notion of cooperation with opponents. I believe that it is more likely to lead to mutual respect than simply hoping for it. I’d like to think that’s where Barack Obama is coming from. In a way, I see the point through a shared obsession with pick-up basketball, a game where you compete aggressively on the court with people who are often your best friends.

On a similar but more serious note, I lived through a conflict where lifelong friends and neighbors and even family members were pitted against one another in a life or death struggle. And where peace, albeit fragile, returned. From these experiences in Beirut and the Beltway I’ve learned that you can do battle with someone and be - or become - their friend.

The point I’m getting at is not that “cooperation, agreement, and compromise between two major political parties” is something to be shunned, certainly not when it can lead to policies that improve people’s lives, but that we shouldn’t confuse it with the collegial atmosphere in DC’s political circles.

Considering how intensely I felt about defeating Bush-Cheney during the 2004 election, and how reprehensible buy viagra the attacks on John Kerry’s service during that campaign, it feels a bit strange to have made the friendly acquaintance of several Bush ‘04 staffers and advisers, including Mark McKinnon, Chuck DeFeo, Mindy Finn, and Patrick Ruffini. And it’s even more bizarre to see Karl Rove following me on Twitter. Still, I wouldn’t pursue bipartisan cooperation with them as an end itself, nor does our comity signify that we are suddenly ‘bipartisan’. I am just as dedicated as I was then to erasing or reversing every last vestige of Bush’s radical excesses. In that regard, the first week of Obama’s presidency was as surreal as the first week of Bush’s, one for the departure from sanity, the other for the return to it.

Progressive bloggers are often mystified by the behavior of Democratic and Republican insiders who wine and dine together and who work in tandem at big consulting firms. But that’s just the way it is in DC. And the same goes for many reporters, whose job often involves buddying up to one another and to politicians. But again, this has little to do with the much-heralded concept of bipartisanship - it’s simply cordiality, real or fabricated.

Enoki mushrooms

To illustrate the point, one of my friends is Patrick Hynes, who advised the McCain campaign and ran a popular anti-Kerry blog in 2004. He was my nemesis back then but I’ve come to know Comprar cialis a decent, hard-working man with a beautiful family. We are nearly polar opposites on ideology, but we’ve d …

Top Super Bowl Moments [Clips]

Between the Steelers’ 100-yard intercept touchdown and The Boss’ halftime show camera crotch-slam, the Super Bowl was bundles of fun before the second half even started.

Here’s a compilation of the top moments so far. We’ll keep updating this post as the game unfolds.

The Intercept

James Harrison’s 100-yard intercept return was reportedly the longest in Super Bowl history. Even non-football fans had to stop and take notice of the lead-widening play. Easily the defining moment of the game.

Super bowl commercial cost

The Boss’ nasty slide

Were you accidentally slamming your junk into America’s face, Bruce Springsteen? Or did you simply find Prince’s infamously phallic 2007 halftime show way too subtle?

Cardinals’ 45-yard run

It will be forgotten amid the Steelers’ epic intercept play (see above), but this play, followed by a shorter touchdown run, put the Cardinals firmly in the game early in the second half.

Patraeus coin flip

LA Times contributor Choire Sicha: “The Patraeus coin-tossing jokes just write themselves.” Indeed! Former Time columnist Ana Marie Cox: “Apparently David Patraeus overseeing superbowl coin toss but not the Iraq elections.” Twitter’s “acavert:”K watching Gen Patraeus and the #superbowl coin toss: ‘Wow, he sure has a lot of charms on his hat!’ Seanwolter: “Thanks Super Bowl! I didnt know Gen Patraeus was such an attractive young man.”

UK: Oil refinery strikes analysis: Paying the price for boom immigration policies

from the london times:the wave of stoppages at fuel refineries in grouse at the employment of distant workers is an ominous sign.

The unofficial wildcat strikes are almost certainly in breach of the laws against unofficial secondary action of this sort.

However, they are also an indication ? as, indeed, was the nationwide stoppage in France on Thursday ? that the recession could bring to the boil the tensions over high levels of immigration that were suppressed during the boom when work was plentiful.

The problem for the British workers who fear for their jobs is that the foreigners to whom they object are EU citizens, and therefore perfectly at liberty to travel to, settle and work in the UK.

One of the most surprising stories of the week was the news that 500,000 Poles had decided to stay in the UK despite the rapidly rising unemployment.

They will, inevitably, compete for jobs with British workers in the coming recession but probably think they are better placed because they will accept lower wages.

The trade unions representing refinery workers are now seeking urgent talks with the Government, though since they supported high immigration they are in a pretty weak position to complain.

Finesse mitchell

What did they think would happen?

Similarly, Gordon Brown’s refrain at the Labour party conference in 2007 that he would ensure ‘British jobs for British workers’ was always going to come back and haunt him.

The placards brandished by the strikers at the Total refinery at Lindsey threw those words back in his face.

But in a globalised world with free movement of travel within the EU, companies will always be able to pull together contract teams of workers who will undercut their British counterparts unless the latter accept lower pay ? which the unions will oppose.

This is something that the Labour party seems unable to understand. As the stoppages spread, Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, said the angry British workers were “entitled to an answer”.

An answer to what, precisely? Is the Government that encouraged immigrant workers to come here in good times now cynically turning on them in bad?
